A New Start To EditorsChoiceForCreators - Episode 3

Well, here we are at Episode 3.

If you've been with me since the start, you'll know this newsletter was born from a deep dive into a single, bizarre meme: the Goon Edit. It was a fascinating case study in the anatomy of a viral video edit.

But dissecting one meme made me realize what I truly want to do: break down the craft of editing itself. The Goon Edit was a symptom; the disease and the cure is in the technique.

So, we're pivoting with purpose.

Welcome to the new Editors Choice for Creators: Your weekly breakdown of the craft behind the content.

My mission is to deconstruct the invisible art of editing. No fluff, no vague inspiration just actionable analysis of the cuts, transitions, and rhythms that make content work.

Let's cut the Assembly!

The Two Pilliars: What You Can Expect

I'll be focusing on two core pillars in every issue:

  1. TREND BREAKDOWN: Deconstructing Viral Editing Techniques
This is where we look at the what. When a new style, a specific transition, or a use of audio explodes across platforms, I'll tear it apart.

What's the technique? (e.g. Moving Split Screen).

From Cassius - Go Up (feat. Cat Power & Pharrell Williams) [Official Video]

Why does it work?

It adds motion and depth even to still shots.

The soft blend guides the viewer’s eye and maintains visual balance.

It keeps both subject and environment visible, enhancing storytelling and visual flow.

It’s especially effective for travel videos, where you want to merge context (the place) and character (the traveler).

How can you do it?

How can you do it? A quick guide to isolating your subject using Resolve's best tools.

For Speed & Modern Workflows: Use the Color Page

  1. Go to the Color Page and select your clip.

  2. In the Color Palette, click the Magic Mask button.

  3. Use the Brush to quickly paint your subject.

  4. Let the AI analyze the clip. Use the Refine Mask settings to clean up the edges.

For Ultimate Control & Precision: Use the Fusion Page

  1. Go to the Fusion Page and add a Bitmap node to your foreground clip.

  2. Draw a precise mask around your subject.

  3. Connect the Bitmap to a Merge node over your background.

  4. Use the Tracker on the Polygon path to automatically follow any movement.

The Choices

  • Magic Mask is fastest for organic shapes like people.

  • Fusion is best for complex shots and total creative control.

Afterwards go to the editor page and simply layer the elements over each other!

This is for those who don’t just want to watch—they want to build. Here’s an example of my first tutorial video <3

The Value Drop: Change Is a Good Thing (And What I've Been Watching)

The biggest shift in my creative process didn't happen on the timeline; it happened in my mindset. I stopped obsessing over creating a "perfect video" and focused instead on building a solid "first draft."

Think of your assembly cut not as the final film, but as the architectural blueprint. This is the crucial difference between:

  • The New Schedule: Saturday sessions dedicated to Trend Editing, deconstructing what's viral right now.

  • The New Schedule: Sunday deep dives into Creator Breakdowns, analyzing the signature styles that inspire us.

I had this realization while watching a CaseOh stream from Goob Lagoon. His raw, unscripted, and chaotic style is a perfect example of building in the moment—he prioritizes the fun of the draft over polished perfection. That’s the energy we need to bring into our editing process.

This pivot—from being a perfectionist editor to a practical architect—is more beneficial in the long run. It builds a foundation of craft that you can apply to any project, turning chaotic ideas into structured, compelling stories. You're not just chasing a trend; you're building a skillset that will outlast any algorithm change.

I’ve only started watching Caseoh recently, and ever since then. Been a growing fan : )

Until next time, embrace the chaos and start editing something stupid.
